01. WHAT IS SOLAR PV?

Solar Photovoltaics (PV) is technology which converts daylight into clean electricity. A photovoltaic system employs solar modules, each comprising a number of solar cells, which generate electrical power. Solar generated power is 100% renewable, clean energy made from daylight.

02. WHY IS A BATTERY USED FOR?

When you create solar power you can store the unused electricity in a battery. This stored energy can then be used at certain times such as peak rates between 5pm-7pm for example, when electricity is at its most expensive.

03. WHAT IS AN EDDIE?

An Eddie is a device used to divert unused electricity directly to your immersion to heat your hot water. Your unused electricity would then go back to the grid when your house needs have been met and water heated.

04. HOW LONG DOES A TYPICAL SOLAR INSTALLATION TAKE?

At MMK we aim to complete a full solar installation in 1 working day.

05. DO I NEED A SOUTHFACING ROOF AND IS IRELAND SUNSHINE AFFECTED?

No, Solar PV panels work on light and most roofs have light shining on them. Many customers have fitted east/west facing systems and typically generate around 85% of an equivalent south-facing roof.

06. WHAT DOES A SOLAR PV SYSTEM INCLUDE?

A solar electric system (PV) consists of the following:

  • Solar panels on the roof, which generate DC (direct current – like in a battery).
  • An ‘Inverter’ which converts this to AC (alternating current – like the electricity in your house socket).
  • Battery to save energy for later use (optional)

The solar panels capture the power from daylight and turn it into DC electricity. The inverter changes the DC current into AC current for your home. The battery fills up during days when there is daylight, so that you can use this energy when the panels aren’t producing electricity.

If you have an immersion, you can elect to divert excess electricity to your immersion to heat hot water. Solar PV modules can be roof or ground mounted, ideally facing south and at a pitch angle. Solar systems facing east and west also function effectively.

07. WILL MY SOLAR SYSTEM NEED REGULAR MAINTENANCE OR UPGRADES?

The solar PV panels come with a 30-year manufacturer’s warranty. The Inverter comes with a 5-year warranty which can be extended to 20 years.

08. WHAT IS THE APPROPRIATE SYSTEM SIZE FOR MY HOME?

The first thing to do is arrange a consultation with MMK and speak with a solar advisor. We will obtain information from you and with an aerial assessment we will determine the number of panels you require and the number that will fit on your roof. Our aim here at MMK to implement a solar system that will deliver the greatest impact and savings over the coming years.

09. IS PLANNING PERMISSION REQUIRED FOR SOLAR PANELS?

Planning permission is not required for solar PV panels. If your property is protected then we do advise you seek advice from your local county council.

10. HOW ARE THE SOLAR PANELS FIXED TO MY ROOF?

Solar panels are generally mounted on a rail system that is fixed to your roof. A solar PV system is designed to maintain the strength and integrity of your roof, while staying watertight.

11. WHAT IS THE TYPICAL PAYBACK PERIOD ON A SOLAR SYSTEM?

The payback period for a solar system at present is approximately 5 years.
